Converter Cat Will putting a universal cat converter on a car equipted with california emissions hurt the vehicle?
The car is a 2001 Saturn L200 sedan that has a plugged cat converter and it needs to be replaced. The car conforms to California emission laws so the only place I have been able to find a replacement part is the dealer, they want $1400 for the part. I have found that many universal or "high flow" converters are available but also come with the warning that the new part should not be put on vehicles equipted with california emissions.
it will fit and work fine but it wont meet emissions. thats why they say not to use them in california.

post-edit:Yes, batteries are the heaviest component of a EV, but there is nothing light about your average solid-block internal combustion engine full of oil, transmission w fluid, clutch, engine cooling system (radiator full of liquid, fans, etc….) exhaust system, torque converter, catalytic converter, muffler, fuel pump, tank full of fuel, etc…. all of which become unneeded or able to be accomplished with a lot less weight in an EV.
