drag race accidents
I was found not resp for an auto acc. His fam is suing me in civil court for 7mill. How can they do that ?
The accident occured I was just turning left onto my street. The man hit my passenger side, he died shortly thereafter at the scene. There were many witnesses, & they say that the motorcycle was drag racing with another vehicle, with speed in the 80's. The road speedlimit is 40mph. By the time I was turnig I realized that these drivers were going way to fast, By the way, the driver of the other car fled the scene, No one got the license plate number. We knew what the make, model, and color of the other vehicle was. Now, his ex-wife was made executor of his estate, She is asking for 1mill each for her 2 children, Then the balance, I assume will be kept in a trust. How can they sue me if I was found not responsible, not even a ticket. I don't understand this civil court. My attorney even told me that we could not say in court that I was found completely free for any wrongdoing... Please help me to understand this
It is a civil action, not a criminal. The justice system allows for recovery, punitive, and compensation to be awarded even though a party has been found innocent of criminal wrong doing. Its up to the jury.
