drag race transmission
drag racing with front wheel drive automatic?
I heard from a buddy that when drag racing with a front wheel drive automatic transmission car, i should put the car in 1st gear when taking off.....and then shift up to the 3rd gear. Some one else told me to just leave it in drive and let the transmission do all the shifting...... what should i do? thanks
If you've got the gas pedal to the floor and you manually shift a typical auto trans equipped car from the "1" position to the "3" position, the transmission is still going to use 2nd gear entirely before it shifts to 3rd. What your friend told you is basically nonsense. (At worst, your transmission is one of the few that will let you skip through 2nd early and your time will be WORSE because the car won't accelerate as quickly in 3rd gear as it would in 2nd at the speed you'd be asking it to upshift.)
Shifting gears yourself in an automatic isn't going to make the car any faster than allowing it to shift by itself UNLESS the transmission is upshifting well before redline in automatic mode AND the transmission allows you to rev the engine considerably higher when shifting manually (most don't). Even then, the difference would be minor at best on a stock vehicle.
