drag race wheels If you go the the drag strip to race should you take your full spare tire out of the trunk?
2003 mustang gt - so rear wheel drive. Would you leave the full spare in the truck or take it out before racing it in the 1/4 mile?
It depends on how badly you want that lower E.T.
It takes roughly 100lb weight savings to gain an extra tenth of a second in the 1/4 mile, so you'd have to take out alot more than the spare tire to see any significant gain.
Personally, I'd leave the spare tire and just work on things like reaction time and getting a good launch. Once you feel that you can drive the car to its potential, then you might want to look at trimming weight from the car.
If you are looking to build the ultimate Camaro drag car, you do not have to look any further than the Stage 2 Ultimate Drag Package from Pfadt Race Engineering. This is the package that produces results on the strip, in every aspect, from 60ft times

The short version: I early-registered for the SOMA Half Ironman back in mid-June; had no idea I was entered into a raffle for doing so. A month later I get a phone call from Red Rock (the race co) announcing that I've won one of the top prizes: a set of Bontrager 6.5 carbon race wheels…retail value: $2400. I was initially excited and went down to Landis where they were presented to me by the Red Rock rep. and we even took a photo for their newsletter. I also found out that day that race wheels are not something you can just stick on your bike and leave there. They are just for racing which means I'd have to either buy a new rear cassette or the special tool that enables me to change out the wheels every so often wit hthe existing cassette. Additionally, I would have to change out the brake pads for cork ones whenever I was to use the Bontragers; carbon would get damaged by the rubber shoes. The more I considered things however, the less sense it made for me to commit to all this extra expense and labor just for a few times a year, not to mention the minimum material gain to be had from popping carbon race wheels onto an aluminum bike. All that said, I tried posting them on EBay, Craigslist, Slowtwitch, etc. I even asked Red Rock if they would take them back in exchange for another prize. They were unable to do that but suggested I contact Landis, where they sourced their prizes. Graciously, Landis agreed and began searching for what I stated as my preference in exchange: a new carbon bike. A month later, they found one that fit me. Yay! The Ironic Twist: About a month ago, got a blast email from Red Rock, announcing that the SOMA race is now cancelled due to extremely low registration, on account of the Tempe Town Lake situation and that they had to turn the race into a duathlon. Refund checks will be mailed shortly. So in the end, I won a new bike for registering early into a race that is no longer taking place. Counting my blessing every day
