drag racing automatic transmissions

I need a new transmission?
I have a 1981 Camaro with a 350 GM crate engine.
The current transmission is a piece of junk aftermarket 4 speed manual. I want to drag race the car, so it needs an automatic. What is the best to get?
Thanks!
if its only going to be a drag car use a powerglide gearbox..
if for street use go the T350 gearbox... i highly recommend, awesome box, can barely feel the shift..

Hi, JT here. Thanks for visiting my Drag Race Car site. Hope you find what you're looking for...there's tons of information and links here. Feel free to leave comments or drop me a line.
Thanks for the interesting story Gene! Did those 2 1/2 ton trucks have six-wheel drive? How many gears were in the automatic transmissions?
Interesting that you were splitting some kindling with Katie's wood splitter, as we got the last of our woodpile split up today with the help of a logsplitter loaned to me by a guy at work. We split about 2/3 of it by hand when this fellow said I should borrow his splitter and finish the job, which we did this weekend. It worked real nice.
It's cooling off over here and there's rain drops hitting the window next to the computer. A good evening to stay inside and play games and maybe pop some corn for a snack.
I understand that Paul but I don’t believe that “automatic transmissions sap power and economy” … today’s A/T is much more efficient than even a few years ago.
I loved my standard vehicle, go Laser go, but alas, it really isn't worth it anymore – they are a bit cheaper up front but you can count on repaying it in replacing the clutch (if you plan to keep the car for awhile which is our MO for car purchases). And, this shocked me, but in the newer cars (we just bought an 09 Hyundai) the automatic transmissions are so “good” that they now get better gas mileage than standards – which is a change from previous generations.
All of that said, someday, I'm going to own a convertible Mini Cooper where no children with sippy cups, goldfish or lollipops will be allowed. And it will be a 5-speed and it will be FUN.
(((Billy))), I know where you're coming from, it's just…
Well, I'm hardly any genius (wife and kids actually are, but that sort of thing isn't all that impressive. Among other things, what two people do I know bought full sized pick up trucks with 4WD, transfer case, automatic transmissions, and engines that are so small that they looked like match boxes in a foot locker when seen in the engine well, and they ask me, “Dad, there's something wrong with my truck, it gets terrible mileage”. And I must explain power to weight ratios, power curves, and they have an “Oooooooh” moment. The next vehicles they got netted questions like, “Dad, why doesn't my new car start? All I hear is a buzzing noise”. “Battery's dead, son”. “But the man said it was a new battery”! “He lied, son”.
“Dad, I can't find the dipstick to check my transmission fluid”. “You have a manual, right”? “Yes”. “There ain't one, son”. You get my drift. Actually, they have a lot of sense and are good at problem solving, and are the go-to guys when there's a problem that no one else can figure out.
Me? I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer to begin with, I have learning disabilities, got a gunshot wound to the head that gave all those ingredients a stir and caused other problems, and I meet people every year that honestly can't understand something like knots, trajectories, fire, basic things, and they are a mystery to them.
I was asked by a man with a Phi Beta Kappa key how we knew when our coffee was done since there was no timer. Our ladies have sewed torn clothes of visitors, I've even fixed torn sandals of visitors, and they marvel at the “skill” necessary to do these things.
Fair do's, you show me a cell phone and I'm stumped. and this computer (I calls her “The Forbin Project: Collosus”) is about all I can handle.
But, as the young'uns are wont to say, “Just sayin'”. ; )
Thank you – finally, someone who understands the hill issue! ]]>
Yea take without a turbo its fkn shit and becomes a something that drives drunk bitches home (ie taxi ie XT falcon)
