what is the ultimate bullrun vehicle?
Bullrun is a reality program where contestants compete for prize money. They drive there own cars. They can't use gps navigation systems or music players. The navigating is done with regular maps. The car will be damaged. It will have to drive on dirt, gravel, snow, and clear pavement. The car will have to drag race, slalom, and drift. It needs to be reliable and have exceptional fuel range.
The ultimate Bullrun vehicle for me would be the new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO that will be out this summer. Here's why. 365hp twin turbo, direct injection V-6 means it can keep up with sports cars on the straights. It is a sedan so it has more interior room (has massaging seats too), more comfortable on a long trip with 2 people and room for all of your stuff. It also gets 25mpg on the highway with direct injection technology & the turbos.
Add to this that it is a Ford and Ford has made great strides in quality over the last several years. Also Ford has an extensive dealer network throughout the U.S. so if something were to happen you likely would be close to a dealer that could help out. This car is also a sleeper. It is fast and would not draw too much attention to you from the law.
Oh and don't forget it comes standard with all wheel drive for days when the weather gets nasty. It has it all. If I had to pick a 2nd it would probably be an Audi A6. I think the dealer network would make me pick the Ford over the Audi on a cross country trip.

A representative of Shell claims that ExxonMobil’s algae oil system would use as much water per day as Mexico City consumes. I find this to be suspicious. Perhaps there is a disconnect of reason here…is the volume of water used by the Algae a one-time need? Or is this per-day? And what exactly is this number in some true measure (liters, or at least, gallons…not swimming pools). I don’t know much about Exxon’s system but I know something of other algae fuel systems and they do not require this amount of water. The comment about Thorium is right on. Thorium is a known quantity, research reactors have been run for over 5 years in the 1960s. The LFTR (liquid floride thorium reactor) solves many of the problems that conventional nuclear reactors have. Don’t count out wind, either – new designs which are much more efficient are around the corner, using technology such as counter-rotating secondary turbines. Solar photovoltaic techologies using plastics or carbon nanotubes have a lot of promise, and there is interesting work being done on solar Sterling engines. There’s tidal power, geothermal, and even schemes to harness the planet’s magnetic field for energy. But I think the safest bet is Thorium.
Finally a good article on the advantages of Mogas. But I disagree on the difficulties of an ethanol blend, which is mostly because of the design of aviation engines and aircraft fuel systems. Every gasoline engine manufacturer or rebuilder should be producing those engines to not only operate with Mogas but also with an ethanol blend. Nothing can be done with current engines, but the aviation industry needs to prepare for the future and there are only a few in the aviation industry that are seriously doing so.
