drag racing rules and regulations
Where can I find rules and regulations to open my own drag/road race course?
I'm looking into opening a drag/drift/road course in my area, but don't know where to look for rules and regulations from a governing body. Is it the government that regulates that, or an independant organization such as the NHRA?
Big question. The first, and largest, hurdle to overcome will be whether your municipality allows it. Any number of established racecourses have had to shut down or at least curtail their activities in recent years. Location is key: Racetracks are LOUD, and if you're within 1/2-mile of even a single unfriendly landowner, you can probably fuhgetaboutit. There has been legislation in individual states to promote racing in recent years, and if you can get a US Senator on your side by convincing him it's going to bring jobs and tourists to your underdeveloped area, it'll all go a lot smoother.
The second hurdle will be insurance. You're going to have to carry a towering pile of liablilty insurance, likely in excess of $10 million. Finding a carrier won't be the hard part, but the premiums will be very high.
As far as sanctioning bodies, the closest thing to an umbrella organization is the FIA. The Federation Internationale De L'automobile sanctions at least 15 different series, from F1 on down, but things get a lot more complicated from there. They do have course specifications at http://www.fia.com/sport/Regulations/circuitregs.html which are worth taking a look at...certainly, any course that meets FIA standards will be OK with anyone else. The main outfits that have organized road racing in the US are the SCCA and NASA. IMSA, Champ, IRL/IndyCar and Grand Am are also major players, bearing in mind that road racing in the US in general isn't very big right now. And while there are some pretty shady characters associated with them, the A1GP series is doing a lot of racing worldwide.
Drag racing in the US is sanctioned by the NHRA and IHRA. Their primary consideration is with the vehicles and drivers, but they will have specifications for the tracks. Talk to your local NHRA division director to get started there.
Drifiting will probably be a little easier. Once you have a course poured, the sanctioning bodies such as the D1GP and USDrift are a lot more concerned with paramedics than the actual track surface.
You can also try to attract autocross, karting and sportbike and motorcycle drag racing.
Really, it boils down to this:
--Find a track designer whose work you like, and work with the sanctioning bodies on the design
--Get local and state approval for your track, while scrounging for Federal support.
--Simultaneously obtain funding for your track
--Build and insure your track
--Promote it and they will come
