For more bass all you need is a sub, an enclosure and an amp for the sub. But I would also recommend getting an aftermarket head unit, they sound much better than stock and give you better options for future parts. Good brands are Pioneer, Alpine, JL Audio, Kicker, MTX Audio.
I would shop for a decent amp and then find a subwoofer after that. You will want to get a MONO amp with a THD rating of less than .10%, preferably less than .05%. The lower that number, the better sound quality. Alpine amps are by far my favorite.
For an Explorer I would get a sealed subwoofer enclosure. I have noticed that sealed sounds best when the cars interior is all open (not having a trunk). Sealed boxes are cheaper for the most part too.
You will also need a decent wiring kit for the amp. If the amp RMS power is 500W or less, get 8 gauge. Over 500W RMS, get 4 gauge.
