How can you get race track handling out of a 71 lemans 4 door?
im building my 71 lemans 4dr with a mild built 350 and im looking for better handling so there isnt soo much sway. As of right now i have the stock wheels but was looking to run 17s up front with about 3inchs of rubber (im normally a truck guy so im used to reffering tires in inchs) and the back im not sure i was thinking 18s but im not sure how thick of tire i want. I want the dragster look with the front down and the back up but also want to be able to have fun in the moutain roads and not worry about losing traction because of body lag. The only thing ive done to the suspension is lift the rear 3in with an aluminum block in the back because it was level with front. The headers are pretty low to the ground so i dont really want to lower it.
The "dragster look) (big tires in the jacked up back end, small tires up front) is absolutely what you don't want for good handling. Lifting the rear end seriously messes with the roll center, raises the center of gravity and usually locates the rear leaf springs at a less than ideal angle. Basically everything you do to set up a car for drag racing is wrong for good handling.
For good road handling you would want to start with a really good set of performance shocks as these will do more for vehicle handling than any other item. You have to control those wheel motions first before you can do anything else. Next a set of stabilizer bars (anti-sway bars) should be applied but not ever having set up a car like this I don't really know what sizes to go with and whether to do front and rear or just front. Addco probably make a set of bars for this car and there are various ways you can make minor adjustments to them to tune the balance of the car. What these do is keep the car from rolling in corners which reduces lateral weight transfer and keeps the tires more firmly planted. While lower is better for handling ride height should at least be more or less the same front and rear and you certainly don't want to use a block type lift kit as that does all sorts of horrible things to the rear suspension geometry. A simple Panhard Rod or better yet a Watts Linkage will help locate the rear axle latterally so it doesn't move from side-to-side under hard cornering. If you have not replaced all the suspension bushings yet do that. It is shocking what a difference that can make. A few years ago a friend of mine restored the suspension on his 74' Firebird Formula to basically stock condition with all new springs, shocks and bushings and it transformed the car.
The tire sizes on that car with stock wheels are today obsolete and really impossible to find anything performance oriented. You do have to go with a larger diameter wheel and lower profile tire setup. Offhand I don't know what the original tire and wheels sizes are for this car (my reference stuff is at the office) but a few years ago I set up a 57' Chevy with 16x7 wheels and P205/60R16 92V tires in front, 16x8 wheels with P225/60R16 97V tires (about a half-inch taller, 3/4" wider) in the rear for a very subtle raked look without going all-out dragster on an otherwise stock car. It turned out pretty nice and the owner was extremely pleased while the car was very streetable.
