dragster horsepower

From a strictly technical point of view, which form of racing is the most advanced???
For me it's a toss-up, and a lot of you may disagree, between Top Fuel dragsters and Formula 1.
Top fuel because they are taking a basically 50-60 year old engine design and producing 8000 horsepower and moving cars to over 335 MPH in a mere 1320 feet.
Formula one, because the technology that goes in to producing one of these cars in incredible. 19,000 RPM engines, 7 speed sequential gearboxes, telemetry sensors on every moving part, and aerodynamics testing that rivals any aerospace company's.
Any opinions on any other forms of racing?
top fuel and drag racing in general is an exercise in displacement, not many innovations in the nhra and ihra are going to be making it into the real world, they still use distributor caps for ignition and carburetors for aspiration, these things haven't been used in a production car for 20 years,
most other series are spec series where one car has been designed and tested and then sold to the teams, not a lot of innovation to be had there, but F1 and Le mans prototypes are the tops in my opinion both are built and designed by individual teams, with each team trying to figure out the answer to the question how do i beat the other guy? both use advanced composites and alloys in construction case in point all f1 teams have figured out how to make a 2.4 liter engine produce 700+ horse power, that's a smaller engine than any car i have owned, for years diesel cars have been on the road. great gas mileage but they have always been slow and noisy beasts, yet Audi has figured out how to make one that is faster than the rest of the field and makes less noise that the tire hum, that's technology and innovation at its best

Dragster Horsepower? 5000-7000?!?!?
In my younger days, I was very involved and interested in drag racing. I kind of lost interest with the advent of bracket racing. Back in the day, a top fuel dragster was rated at 1200-1500bhp. Now I'm seeing 5000-7000bhp. What changes took place (while I was napping) for such a huge increase in horsepower? I know blowers got bigger (6-71 vs 14-71). Fuel...more nitro methane? Thanks.
This question should have been put in the other auto racing section, not the F-1 section.
Back in the day TF engines were limited by the amount of power they could withstand before burning up (pistons) or breaking rods, cranks or blocks. They ran 98 to100% nitromethane back then. Pumping more (by volume) nitromethane into the cylinders would produce more power but using too much resulted in destroyed motors.
The changes started with purpose built blocks, heads and crankshafts that could withstand large amounts of nitromethane and survive. The percent of nitro used now is less than years ago but the volume is much more. Fuel pumps had to be developed to distribute the large volumes needed. Compression ratios were reduced to allow larger volumes of fuel. More powerful magneto systems were introduced to ignite the heavy fuel volumes, then 2 magnetos were used. Larger and more powerful blowers were developed to highly compress the air that is mixed with the fuel to make the fuel volatile enough to ignite. Nitromethane releases oxygen as it burns. Once it is burning it needs no oxygen from the air to continue burning.
Decades ago the supercharger was used to pack the cylinders with air while a small amount of nitro was injected and then burned. The modern TF supercharger helps fill the cylinder with nitromethane along with enough compressed air to make it an ignitable mixture. The second job of the supercharger is to expel the burned and unburned mixtures left after the exhaust stroke leaving a clean cylinder for the next event.
The short answer is the engines are burning 4 or 5 times as much nitromethane as they did years ago and surviving most of the time.

Hi, JT here. Thanks for visiting my Drag Race Car site. Hope you find what you're looking for...there's tons of information and links here. Feel free to leave comments or drop me a line.
hola! chicklet!
Love the blog and love you (of course). I am envisioning you as a member of something like a royal family. Motorcade seems right up your alley. I've always said Kai's a prince!
Why don't you teach your family members how to build power tool drag racers and hold your very own event? I can only imagine that these are some very creative people…
Missing you tons! Thanks for the journal. mmeerroowswers!

wow….a lot of serious stuff here ….however…one needs a lexicon to figure out the cryptic IM comments…like WTF is BFF…big fucking fag or what does….lol…mean….lube, oil and love to me…what we did to our hopped up hot rods on the weekends. I never tried the note pasted to the window on the freeway, but then, I never had to worry about a date….I was a stud, a real hunk, I was beating them off at 30 yet, and after birthing the first kid, then it was all downhill after that. I'll never tell the secret of love.

People who drag race cars on city streets are simply enjoying life. They are also endangering everyone else on the road who may also be trying to enjoy their life. Try looking at the world through other people’s perspective dude, you sound like a jackass.
old classics *could* go up, but you’d have to find a beater and fix it, or get really lucky. even then (especially in a crappy economy) it’s not guaranteed. I love me some old hot-rods, but that’s not something I would ever consider an investment, and if he’s buying cars for his friends, that’s not a way to make the money last.
