Note:
The same uncompressed wave file is always used as the source.
So:
uncompressed wave —> AAC
same uncompressed wave —-> vorbis
same uncompressed wave —-> mp3 file 1
same uncompressed wave —-> mp3 file 2
My bet is that all the files will sound about the same. Thus proving that AAC is NOT the best codec.
Use the slider under the microphone in audacity and check your recording level under your control panel>sounds configuration.
You need stereo mix / wave-out mix from your sound card to record. As you have it, you probably use Windows 7 or Vista.
You should be able to record from your wave-out mix. The quality of recordings depends a lot on your sound card. Also do not use max volume when recording, as in most cases you get low quality.
You can also try to update your sound card driver. And you can try to record with other programs like reeware Freecorder 4.
