Do drivers of dragsters (like this: http://www.eudaimoniacoach.com/7principles/6/top-fuel-dragster-burnout.jpg) have to shift gears during a race?
No. Jet cars/truck/dragsters do not need to shift. They don't even have a gear box, they are powered purely by the thrust that they produce.

In the 1960's, I started racing at CT. Dragway with my partners, Jimmy Coty and Willy Hardie in several classes, including Funny Cars and Top Fuel Dragsters. Frank Maratta, Sr. guided our careers and we turned professional. He was a visionary. He'd advise us to write to companies, such as Winston, Coca Cola and Budweiser for sponsorship, but they turned us down because way back then, they didn't want to be associated with racing. He was right, they were wrong. He always told us to “Do your homework.” He saw situations as opportunities ans built on them and that's why CT. Dragway was such a success. He was the quintessential promoter and put on a show that would rock the state!
