Would MPG change if i have a 350 small block turned into a 383?
Well i have a 350 small block and im curious what would be the benefits/hindrances of putting a 400 crankshaft and new heads in the engine causing it to be a 383 engine? Im looking to focus on typical increases/decreases of mileage, horsepower, and torque
On avg. the 383 will gain about 30-35 HP just from the increase in size, with about a 35-45 ft lbs torque gain over same built 350.
Now fuel mileage is a strange thing. Most people don't believe this when I tell them but a mild performance engine will get better fuel mileage than a stock engine.
This is due to the Volumetric Efficiency (VE) of the engine.
The stock 350 has about 80-83% VE.
When you incease the bore and stroke, add more compression, better flowing heads, alittle bigger cam, better flowing intake and exhaust, etc the VE will go up. It will be in the 89-93% range based on parts you use.
This means your mileage goes up.
So if you built a good mild 383 using lighter weight rotating parts like the scat 9000 cast crank, scat rods, good speed pro flat top hyer pistons, .040" quench height, about 10.0:1 compression, 220/230@.050" cam, 96 and up vortec heads or something like brodix IK180 heads, edelbrock RPM air gap intake, 600 to 670 cfm carb, long tube 1-5/8" headers, dual 2.5" pipes, X pipe, good flowing mufflers, etc.
You would end up getting about 4 to 5 miles per gallon better than your stock 350 gets now... Make about 425 HP too.
Now this also assumes you drive it the same way as you did your stock 350. Which alot of people find it hard to do when going from 160-225 HP to 400+ HP.. They keep wanting to start off hard, floor it alot, etc.. If you do that mileage will drop
Cause now back to what others said.. Bigger engine, more HP does take more fuel to run it, WHEN YOU RUN IT HARD

Yes any of the ZZ4 or derivative motors will bolt in for your application. Utilizing the same motor mounts and bolts hole for the trans. Swap over your front accesories and the TPI intake or super ram/mini ram set up and go.
Nice man. I've got a 79 camaro 2 bolt main that I'm doing a 388 on, already got it bored .060 over. looking at voodoo cam, .500 lift and some ported vortec heads, top it off with an edelbrock manifold and 2 holley double pumpers and I'll be in business!
