A top fuel dragster has a mass of 727 kg and covers the 1/4-mile in 4.00 sec starting from rest and finishing at 300 mph (133 m/s). What minimum power is needed in Watts? How much power is needed if the total system is only 25% efficient?
Ignoring energy lost to friction, we can say all the work done on the system is in the acceleration of the vehicle. Hence the total energy increase is 1/2 * m * v^2. To obtain the power, we divide this by the time over which this energy is transferred, so we have
P = 1/2 * m * v^2 / t
Substituting the values in the question:
P = 1/2 * 727 * 133^2 / 4 = 1 607 487 W = 1.6 MW
If the system is only 25% efficient then we need four (100/25) times as much power for the same result, so
P = 1 607 487*4 = 6.4 MW
