why do fuel dragsters funny cars only go 1/4 mile why not a whole mile why at some tracks do they only go1/8 mile
I'm not sure what the history behind the quarter mile is, but I think a lot of it would have to do with the amount of space available (it's a lot easier to find an appropriate place to build a facility that's a quarter mile long rather than a mile long) which might explain some of the 1/8 mile tracks. You also have to factor in enough room for the staging area and the slow down area, which is probably almost as long as the track itself.
Another aspect is that the speeds that today's cars would reach in a mile would be obscene. Of course, if a 1 mile track were the norm, the rules and approach to racing would probably be considerably different for safety purposes.
